College Basketball Betting: Analyzing The Big Sky Conference

February 12, 2009

College basketball betting aficionados made a bundle betting "over" in the Big Sky, a trend they'll be tracking again this season. Straight up (SU), against the spread (ATS), and over/under (O/U) records for the 2007/08 season are in parentheses:

PORTLAND STATE (23-10 SU, 16-13-1 ATS, 19-10-1 O/U): Conference MVP Jeremiah Dominguez (14.4 PPG) leads a solid cast of marauding Vikings.

By the Numbers (2007/08 Season)

Home Favorite:  4-6-1

Home Underdog:  0-0

Away Favorite:  4-2

Away Underdog:  5-3

Neutral Site:   3-2

Sportsbook Buster: The Vikings were 9-5 ATS on the road last season.

Sports Betting Angle: The "over" was 13-4-1 in Portland State Big Sky games last season.

MONTANA (14-16 SU, 12-15 ATS, 17-8-2 O/U): Jordan Hasquet (13.7 PPG, 7.2 RPG) leads a deep and talented team that underachieved last season.

By the Numbers (2007/08 Season)

Home Favorite:  5-6

Home Underdog:  0-0

Away Favorite:  1-3

Away Underdog:  4-5

Neutral Site:   1-1

Sportsbook Buster: The "over" was 12-4 when the Grizzlies were favorites.

Sports Betting Angle: Montana was 2-6 ATS in games played on one or no days rest.

NORTHERN ARIZONA (21-11 SU, 15-12-1 ATS, 13-15 O/U): Josh Wilson, the Big Sky's assist leader, should keep the Lumberjacks in the title hunt.

By the Numbers (2007/08 Season)

Home Favorite:  6-5

Home Underdog:  1-1

Away Favorite:  3-2

Away Underdog:  3-3-1

Neutral Site:   2-1

Sportsbook Buster: The Lumberjacks were 11-7 as favorites.

Sports Betting Angle: The "under" was 8-5 when Northern Arizona played at home.

IDAHO STATE (12-19 SU, 11-18 ATS, 15-12-2 O/U): Three starters return but more help is needed up front before ISU is a legitimate contender.

By the Numbers (2007/08 Season)

Home Favorite:  1-2

Home Underdog:  4-4

Away Favorite:  0-2

Away Underdog:  6-9

Neutral Site:   0-1

Sportsbook Buster: The Bengals were 2-9 ATS in non-conference games.

Sports Betting Angle: Idaho State was 3-9 ATS in games following a SU win.

NORTHERN COLORADO (13-16 SU, 16-10-1 ATS, 15-11-1 O/U): Jabril Banks (13.2 PPG, 5.8 RPG) gives the Bears a chance to make some mischief.

By the Numbers (2007/08 Season)

Home Underdog:  2-1

Away Favorite:  0-1

Away Underdog:  8-5-1

Neutral Site:   1-0

Sportsbook Buster: The Bears were 9-1-1 ATS versus non-conference opponents.

Sports Betting Angle: Northern Colorado was 11-6-1 as an underdog.

WEBER STATE (16-14 SU, 16-11 ATS, 13-13 O/U): The loss of their top two scorers probably relegates the Wildcats to the middle of the pack.

By the Numbers (2007/08 Season)

Home Favorite:  7-3

Home Underdog:  1-1

Away Favorite:  1-2

Away Underdog:  7-2

Sports Betting Angle: Weber State was 10-5 ATS on three or more days rest.

EASTERN WASHINGTON (11-19 SU, 16-12 ATS, 11-16 O/U): Four starters return but questions linger as to whether that's a good thing or not.

Home Underdog:  4-4

Away Favorite:  1-0

Away Underdog:  6-7

Sports Betting Angle: Eastern Washington was 11-5 ATS in the Big Sky.

MONTANA STATE (15-15 SU, 12-15-1 ATS, 13-15 O/U): A gutted backcourt that included the Big Sky's scoring leader will cage the Bobcats.

By the Numbers (2007/08 Season)

Home Favorite:  4-6-1

Home Underdog:  1-0

Away Favorite:  1-2

Away Underdog:  5-7

Sports Betting Angle: Montana State was 4-8-1 ATS after a SU loss.

SACRAMENTO STATE (4-24 SU, 11-12-1 ATS, 12-10-2 O/U): Loren Leath (13.1 PPG) has little help on a team that won only four games last season.

By the Numbers (2007/08 Season)

Home Favorite:  0-0

Home Underdog:  4-5

Away Favorite:  0-0

Away Underdog:  7-7-1
