SPORTS BETTING, GEORGE CLOONEY STYLE

From the actor George Clooney to golfer Lee Trevino and athletes, journalists, business leaders, executives and whomever in between, June was a very good month for those of us who enjoy quips and quotations, some side-splitting, some strident, some silly, some sophomoric, on the world of sports and sports betting:

"I was wiping my forehead with $100 bills going. 'Whoo, is it hot in here?'"

--Oscar winner and heartthrob George Clooney, 46, after beating fellow actor John Krasinski, 27, by an 11-8 score in a one-on-one basketball game on the set of the upcoming motion picture, "Leatherheads," after the younger actor had boasted for months that he could beat Clooney. The "Ocean's 13" star won $1,000.

"To quite an extent, gambling is a tax on ignorance."

--Billionaire Warren Buffet, obviously no fan of gambling, and another otherwise intelligent person who doesn't understand that some folks actually are smart (and lucky) enough to win at betting.

(LA Lakers owner) "Jerry Buss, age 74, is busted for DUI. His passenger is a 23-year-old woman. So Buss is making huge concessions to his years. Not so long ago his age cap for dates was 18.

"But Buss still has violated ex-San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown's 100-year rule: The combined ages of two people on a date must exceed 100."

--Scott Ostler, San Francisco Chronicle

More from Ostler:

"Sadly, the Falcons don't play at Cleveland so we won't get to see Michael Vick greeted by the Dawg Pound.

"Maybe I'm too hard on Mike Vick. Maybe it's just my frustration. I'm having a lousy season in my dog-fighting fantasy league."

"It's often said that this golf course punishes the members and destroys the guests. William C. Fownes (son of the course designer) believed that a shot poorly played was a shot irrevocably lost. That's basically the way Oakmont plays. You can't get away with any kind of mistake."

--Bill Griffin, president of the Oakmont, a day before his course humbled the world's best golfers at the US Open.

"It's tough playing tennis and being Mother Teresa at the same time."

--Maria Sharapova, on being jeered at the French Open after she ignored the raised hand of opponent Patty Schnyder, who was trying to call a time-out, and served anyway, hitting a ball that Schnyder did not attempt to return, giving Sharapova her first ace of the match.

"I don't have any thoughts about Barry. I don't even know how to spell his name."

--Hank Aaron on Barry Bonds, who is closing in on the Hall of Famer's career home run record.

"Build a Better Burger" on Food Network; "Mama's Family" on ION Network; and the movie, "Meltdown: Days Destruct" on the Sci-Fi Channel"

--Sports Business Daily, offering a partial list of the television shows that attracted more viewers than the first three games of the Stanley Cup Finals.

"Now batting third for the Tigers…Don Imus"

--Mike Lopresti, Gannett columnist, after Detroit outfielder Gary Sheffield claimed that Latin players are displacing blacks in Major League Baseball because they're easier to control.

"After consulting several members of the LPGA Tour on this England-born golfer, I've found that nobody doesn't like Sarah Lee."

--Nick Canepa, San Diego Union-Tribune

"If only Ricky Williams were an alcoholic, he'd still be playing in the NFL.

"If only he'd showed up for games haggard and hung over, he'd still have a job.

"If only he'd been arrested for DUI manslaughter, he'd still be earning millions of dollars on the football field.

"But Williams is seemingly just a harmless and hopeless pothead on the verge of being drug-tested out of the league because NFL powers-that-be have declared marijuana to be evil. I can just hear the NFL muckety-mucks now as they sit at the big mahogany bar at the owners meeting ordering single-malt scotches and vodka martinis and lamenting to each other, 'Why in the world does Ricky Williams need marijuana to get through the day?'"

--Mike Bianchi, The Orlando Sentinel

"Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for the Yankees, Lindsay Lohan was spotted driving their bandwagon the other night."

--Jim Armstrong, The Denver Post

"Nobody but you and your caddie care what you do out there, and if your caddie is betting against you, he doesn't care, either."

--Lee Trevino
