COLLEGE BASKETBALL BETTING:
ANALYZING THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE

November 2007

Six of the eight teams had losing pointspread records outside the conference, an indication to college basketball betting technicians to tread lightly with this group. Straight up (SU), against the spread (ATS), and over/under (O/U) records for the 2006/07 season are in parentheses:

GONZAGA (23-11 SU, 18-15 ATS, 20-13 O/U): The Zags could land three players on the first-team all-conference unit, reason enough to predict another WCC crown and Big Dance invitation.

Sportsbook Buster: The Bulldogs were 11-5 ATS in conference play last season.
Sports Betting Angle: The "over" was 16-10 when Gonzaga was a favorite last season.

ST. MARY'S (17-15 SU, 13-15-1 ATS, 13-16 O/U): Four starters return, including F Diamon Simpson, who led the Gaels in scoring (14.1 PPG), rebounding (7.7 RPG), steals and blocked shots. SMU could challenge the Zags.

Sports Betting Angle: St. Mary's was 4-8-1 ATS in non-conference play.

SAN DIEGO (18-14 SU, 15-11 ATS, 19-6-1 O/U): Four returning starters provide plenty of pop, allowing former Gonzaga assistant and first year Head Coach Bill Grier to take aim at the perennial champions.

Sportsbook Buster: The Toreros were 3-7 ATS at home but 10-2 ATS on the road.
Sports Betting Angle: With a 19-6-1 record against the total, San Diego was "over'whelming.

SAN FRANCISCO (13-18 SU, 11-16-2 ATS, 15-12-1 O/U): It looks like there are too many holes to fill for the Dons to make progress in this highly competitive neighborhood.

Home Underdog: 0-3
Away Favorite: 2-0-1
Away Underdog: 5-7

Sports Betting Angle: San Francisco was 4-11-2 ATS on fewer than three days rest.

PEPPERDINE (8-23 SU, 15-15 ATS, 17-13 O/U): The Waves will run and shoot the three but the roster is too new and young to expect much.

Home Underdog: 1-4
Away Favorite: 0-1
Away Underdog: 10-4

Sports Betting Angle: Pepperdine was 3-8 ATS at home.

SANTA CLARA (21-10 SU, 16-13 ATS, 16-13 O/U): First year Head Coach Kerry Keating will build around 6-10, 305-pound center John Bryant (10.4 PPG, 7.7 RPG) but the Broncos don't have much else in the way of firepower.

Sports Betting Angle: Santa Clara was 6-3 ATS after a SU defeat.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT (13-18 SU, 7-17-2 ATS, 13-13 O/U): The roster features seven freshmen and just one senior, meaning the Lions will have to wait a year or two to roar.

PORTLAND (9-23 SU, 10-18-1 ATS, 14-16 O/U): Like some other teams in the conference, the Pilots are very young (five freshmen), a condition that usually doesn't translate to many victories.
